The following worksheet contains information about the forms of 16 English verb tenses. They are as follows:

  • Present Simple – I do
  • Past Simple – I did
  • Future Simple – I will do
  • Present Continuous – I am doing
  • Past Continuous – I was doing
  • Future Continuous – I will be doing
  • Present Perfect – I have done
  • Past Perfect – I had done
  • Future Perfect – I’ll have done
  • Present Perfect Continuous – I have been doing
  • Past Perfect Continuous – I had been doing
  • Future Perfect Continuous – I’ll have been doing
  • Past Future Simple – I would do
  • Past Future Continuous – I would be doing
  • Past Future Perfect – I would have done
  • Past Future Perfect Continuous – I would have been doing

Now a bit more about the usage, forms and examples of 16 English verb tenses.

1. Present Simple Tense is used:
– to express the habitual action;
– to express the general truth;
– with a non-progressive verb.

Forms:
( + ) S + V1 (s/es)
( – ) S + do/does + not + V1
( ? ) Do/Does + S + V1 ?

Examples:
(+) I play video games every night.
(-) You don’t play video games every night.
(?) Do you play video games every night?

2. Past Simple Tense is used to:
– express habit in the past;
– express something happens in the past.

Forms:
( + ) S + V2
( – ) S + did + not + V1
( ? ) Did + S + V1 ?

Examples:
(+) I smoked when I was student.
(-) I didn’t smoke when I was student.
(?) Did you smoke when you were a student?

3. Future Simple Tense is used to:
– talk about things that haven’t happened yet;
– predict a future event;
– with I or We, to express a spontaneous decision;
– express willingness.

Forms:
( + ) S + will/shall + V1
( – ) S + will/shall + not + V1
( ? ) will/shall + S + V1 ?

Examples:
(+) It will rain tomorrow.
(-) The baby won’t eat his soup.
(?) Will you go to the cinema with me?

4. Present Continuous Tense is used to:
– declare ongoing activities;
– describe the activities in the process;
– declare pique using ‘forever’, ‘constantly’, ‘always’, etc.

Forms:
( + ) S + is/am/are + V-ing
( – ) S + is/am/are + not + V-ing
( ? ) Is/am/are + S + V-ing ?

Examples:
(+) You are running your car so fast today.
(-) You aren’t running your cycle so fast today.
(?) Are you running your truck so fast today?

5. Past Continuous Tense is used to  express an activity that was happening in the past.

Forms:
( + ) S + was/were + V-ing
( – ) S + was/were + not + V-ing
( ? ) was/were + S + V-ing ?

Examples:
(+) I was playing football when he came.
(-) Sira wasn’t cooking while Doni going home last night.
(?) Was Andri running when it rained?

6. Future Continuous Tense is used when an action is expected to occur in the future and be completed.

Forms:
( + ) S + will/shall + V-ing
( – ) S + will/shall + not + V-ing
( ? ) will/shall + S + V-ing?

Examples:
(+) By Christmas I will be skiing like a pro.
( – ) I’m afraid by  Christmas I will not be skiing like a pro.
( ? ) Will you be bringing your friend to the pub tonight?

7. Present  Perfect Tense is used to:
– declare activity that just has happened;
– using ‘Since/For’ to declare the duration.

Forms:
( + ) S + has/have + V3
( – ) S + has/have + not + V3
( ? ) has/have + S + V3 ?

Examples:
(+) I have done my homework.
(-) I haven’t done my homework.
(?) Have you done you homework?

8. Past Perfect Tense is used to declare an activity which has been done before other activities in the past.

Forms:
( + ) S + had + V3
( – ) S + had + not + V3
( ? ) Had + S + V3 ?

Examples:
(+) I had already remembered you before you remembered me.
(-) I hadn’t taken a bath before I went to school.
(?) Had you taken a bath when you go to school?

9. Future Perfect Tense describes an event that is expected or planned to happen before a time of reference in the future.

Forms:
( + ) S + will/shall + have+ V3
( – ) S + will/shall + not + have + V3
( ? ) will/shall + S + have + V3?

Examples:
(+) I will have gone home by the end of this year.
(-) I will not have gone home by the end of this year.
(?) Shall you have gone home by the end of this year?

10. Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to declare the duration of activities.

Forms:
( + ) S + has/have + been + V-ing
( – ) S + has/have + been + not + V-ing
( ? ) has/have + S + been + V-ing ?

Examples:
(+) She has been borrowing your pen for a week.
(-) He hasn’t borrowing your book for an hour.
(?) Have you borrowing my door for 2 days?

11. Past Perfect Continuous Tense shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the past.

Forms:
( + ) S + had + been + V-ing
( – ) S + had + been + not + V-ing
( ? ) had + S + been + V-ing ?

Examples:
(+) Martha had been walking three miles a day before she broke her leg.
(-) I had been not leaving you for 2 months to forget you.
(?) Had you been walking long when you finally found the house?

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense describes actions that will continue up until a point in the future.

Forms:
( + ) S + will/shall + have + been + V-ing
( – ) S + will/shall + not + have + been + V-ing
( ? ) will/shall + S + have + been + V-ing ?

Examples:
(+) I will have been staying in Bogor for 1 years by the end of this month.
(-) I will not have been staying in Jakarta by tomorrow.
(?) Will you staying in Jogjakarta by the end of this week?

13. Past Future Simple Tense (aka ‘Future-in-the-Past’) is used to express the idea that in the past you thought something would happen in the future.

Forms:
( + ) S + should/would + V1
( – ) S + should/would + not + V1
( ? ) Should/would + S + V1 + ?

Examples:
(+) I would buy a new sport car.
(-) I wouldn’t sing a song.
(?) Would you love me?

14. Past Future Continuous Tense is used to express the idea that in the past the action was predicted, planned, expected or obliged to be happening in a certain period in the future.

Forms:
( + ) S + should/would + be + V-ing
( – ) S + should/would + not + be + V-ing
( ? ) should/would + S + be + V-ing + ?

Examples:
(+) He would be jumping between the rocks at the night yesterday.
(-) I wouldn’t be playing billiard at 8 o’clock last night.
(?) Would he be jumping between the rocks at the night yesterday?

15. Past Future Perfect Tense denotes the action or state completed at a time formerly in prospect.

Forms:
( + ) S + should/would + have + V3
( – ) S + should/would + not + have + V3
( ? ) should/would + S + have + V3+ ?

Examples:
(+) You should have started thinking about your future now.
(-) She shouldn’t have left before I came to pick her.
(?) Would the party have begun when we arrive tonight?

16. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense is used to express an action or imaginary situation that would have been happening in the past.

Forms:
( + ) S + should/would + have/has + been + V-ing
( – ) S + should/would + have/has + been + V-ing
( ? ) Should/would + S + have/has + been + V-ing + ?

Examples:
(+) I would have been eating when you scream my name loudly.
(-) We would have been talking when you have a lot of time.
(?) Would you have been disappointing fo her?
