“There is\/There are” is a key topic for early English learners. Using it, students can easily describe WHAT is located SOMEWHERE.<\/p>\n
There are general rules of using “There is\/There are” phrases.<\/p>\n
We use\u00a0there is<\/b>\u00a0for\u00a0singular<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0there are<\/b>\u00a0for\u00a0plural<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n- There is a dog in the car<\/li>\n
- There are two cats on the roof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
We also use\u00a0There is<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0uncountable nouns<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n- There is<\/strong>\u00a0milk<\/em>\u00a0in the fridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The contraction of\u00a0there is<\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0there’s<\/b>.\u00a0You\u00a0cannot<\/b>\u00a0contract\u00a0there are<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n- There’s<\/b>\u00a0a good song on the radio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The negative is formed by putting\u00a0not<\/b>\u00a0after\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0are<\/i>:<\/p>\n\n- There is\u00a0not<\/b>\u00a0a horse in the field.<\/li>\n
- There are\u00a0not<\/b>\u00a0eight children in the school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
To form a question we place\u00a0is \/ are<\/b>\u00a0in front of\u00a0there<\/b>. We also use\u00a0there is \/ are<\/b>\u00a0in short answers.<\/p>\n\n- Is there<\/b>\u00a0a dog in the supermarket? – No, there isn’t.<\/li>\n
- Are there<\/b>\u00a0any polar bears in Antarctica? – No, there aren’t.<\/li>\n
- Is there\u00a0<\/b>any ice-cream in the freezer? – Yes, there is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Use\u00a0there are<\/strong>\u00a0when you\u2019re talking about \u201ca lot<\/strong>\u201d of countable nouns.\u00a0There is<\/strong>\u00a0comes with\u00a0uncountable nouns.<\/em><\/p>\n
